Kathmandu - Government of Nepal has approved the “National Monsoon Preparedness and Response Action Plan, 2083” as authorities intensify efforts to reduce the impact of seasonal disasters expected during this year’s monsoon period.
The decision was endorsed during the 34th meeting of the Executive Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, chaired by Honorable Minister for Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Urban Development Sunil Lamsal.
According to the newly approved national action plan, monsoon-related disasters could affect approximately 51,868 households and nearly 226,661 people across Nepal this year. The plan outlines coordinated preparedness and emergency response mechanisms aimed at minimizing human casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to local livelihoods during the monsoon season.
Officials stated that the action plan clearly defines the responsibilities of government agencies and other concerned institutions involved in disaster preparedness and response. It also includes details of designated contact persons as well as inventories of essential search, rescue, and relief materials required for emergency operations.
During the meeting, the committee also approved revisions to the “Standards for Formation and Mobilization of Search and Rescue Teams, 2083,” strengthening operational readiness for emergency deployment. In addition, amendments were endorsed for several important disaster management frameworks and procedures, including the “Artificial Incident Exercise Operation Procedure, 2083,” the “Forecast-based Anticipatory Action National Framework, 2083,” and the “Grant Procedure for Strengthening, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Disaster-Affected Private Housing, 2081.”
Nepal experiences severe monsoon impacts every year, including floods, landslides, inundation, and infrastructure damage, particularly in vulnerable hill and Terai regions. Authorities believe that proactive preparedness, inter-agency coordination, and community-level readiness will play a critical role in reducing disaster risks during the upcoming monsoon season.
The meeting reflects Nepal’s continuing efforts to strengthen disaster resilience and improve national preparedness amid growing climate-related challenges affecting vulnerable communities across the country.
