Severe Flooding in Khare Khola Puts Multiple Settlements in Dolakha at Risk

Dolakha, Nepal | July 23 - Severe flooding in the Khare Khola river in the northern part of Dolakha has triggered extensive riverbank erosion, placing several settlements in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality at immediate risk.
According to local reports, floodwaters that surged overnight have severely eroded the riverbanks near Langota and Kharekhola settlements in Ward No. 8, leaving more than 15 houses in Langota under threat. Residents have begun moving household belongings to safer locations as the river continues to cut into the settlement.
Local resident Ramesh Shrestha said the ongoing erosion poses a serious danger, warning that the flood could wash away the entire settlement if conditions worsen.
The flooding has also endangered the Gurumphi market in Ward No. 6 and the Sumna settlement in Ward No. 5 of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality, where continuous erosion along the Khare Khola has heightened concerns among local communities.
Infrastructure in the affected area has suffered significant damage. The road connecting the northern settlements has been completely washed out, disrupting transportation and restricting access to the region. In addition, several electricity poles have been swept away by the floodwaters, causing power outages in the affected communities.
The incident underscores the growing vulnerability of mountain settlements to monsoon-induced floods and riverbank erosion, highlighting the urgent need for emergency response, infrastructure protection, and long-term disaster risk reduction measures in Nepal's high-risk river basins.FB_IMG_1784779908626-1784780081.jpg
