Continuous Rainfall Triggers Landslide Threat in Baglung, 13 Households and Public Buildings at Risk

Baglung, Nepal | July 22, 2026
Continuous monsoon rainfall has triggered a major landslide in Galkot Municipality-7, Malma, placing the Gairakhark settlement in western Baglung under serious risk. Around 75 metres of land at Kaule, along the Harichaur-Malma-Pandavkhani-Bongadobhan motor road connecting Kaule Khola to Nachnedanda, has been swept away, raising concerns about further slope failure if heavy rainfall continues.
Residents say persistent rainfall since the onset of the monsoon has caused repeated landslides across the area, leaving the local community living in fear. According to local resident Gyan Bahadur Thapa, the landslide has completely damaged the road, and continued rainfall without immediate stabilization measures could allow the landslide to reach the settlement.
The landslide has placed 13 households, Janahit Secondary School, and the Janahit Art Centre building at risk. Damage to the motor road has also disrupted transportation, affecting students' access to school and hindering the daily activities of local residents.
Ward Chairperson Raj Thapa of Galkot Municipality-7 said the municipality is coordinating with the District Administration and other concerned agencies to implement temporary protection measures and prevent further damage. He warned that failure to undertake timely risk reduction efforts could result in significant loss of life and property.
Local authorities have already informed Galkot Municipality, the District Administration Office, and other relevant agencies about the situation. Meanwhile, residents have appealed for urgent intervention while urging communities in vulnerable areas to remain alert and prioritize safety as monsoon-induced landslide risks continue across Nepal.
