Solukhumbu: Two ward office buildings in Solukhumbu have come under high risk due to landslides triggered by continuous rainfall, while 11 households have been displaced.
The ward office buildings of Solududhkunda Municipality-3, Tamakhani, and Sotang Rural Municipality-4 have been placed under high landslide risk. Along with the ward office structures, nearby settlements have also been threatened by the landslides.
According to Kaman Singh Thapamagar, Coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee and Chief District Officer, the ward office building of Solududhkunda Municipality-3 became at risk after a landslide occurred on Saturday night.
Similarly, the ward office building of Sotang Rural Municipality-4 has been at risk due to a landslide that occurred a few days earlier. “As continuous rainfall is occurring, other government structures in the district have also suffered minor damage,” said Chief District Officer Thapamagar.
A landslide occurred from the road expansion area directly above the ward office building in Tamakhani, Solududhkunda Municipality-3, washing away the ward office toilet. According to Ward Chairperson Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, the nearby administrative building has also come under high risk. He said that a large landslide had fallen from the cliff above the ward office. The landslide has damaged the road and nearby structures, and there is a risk that it may expand further.
“The landslide is so large that it is not possible to control it immediately,” said Ward Chairperson Sherpa. He added that if the landslide increases further, the ward office building as well as the health post could also be affected. Since the landslide has been continuously falling from the cliff above the ward office, the surrounding land area is becoming increasingly dangerous.
Likewise, the ward office building of Sotang Rural Municipality-4 has also come under high landslide risk. The landslide has swept away the wall of the ward office premises. Ward Chairperson Deep Bahadur Rai said that the ward office building and the staff residence are also at risk.
He stated that as the landslide continues to grow, it could pull down the ward office building at any time. Five households located below the ward office have been displaced due to the landslide. After their houses became unsafe, they have been living in temporary tents set up in a safer place.
“The landslide is increasing. Not only is the ward office at risk, but it has also put the settlement in danger. When there is heavy rainfall, I cannot sleep at night,” said Ward Chairperson Rai. “The rain is continuous. The land around the ward office has become loose due to the landslide. I am extremely worried; it is impossible to know when and what kind of incident may occur.”
Meanwhile, five households in Thulung Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality-9 have also been displaced due to landslides. According to Nabin Raja Budhathoki, Chief of the District Police Office, Solukhumbu, the families were moved to a nearby school building after their houses became unsafe.
Similarly, in Likhu Pike Rural Municipality-3, Chaulakharka, one household has also been displaced due to a landslide, police said. Police Deputy Superintendent Budhathoki stated that the family was relocated to a school building after their house came under landslide risk.
So far, 11 households have been displaced in different parts of the district due to landslides. Police said that the displaced families have been prevented from staying in unsafe houses and have been relocated to safer shelters.
Continuous rainfall has further increased the risk of landslides along rural roads, government structures, and settlements across the district. Authorities have warned that areas with steep slopes and previous landslide history remain highly vulnerable, especially where road expansion has disturbed natural terrain.
The District Administration Office and local governments have stated that they are closely monitoring settlements and infrastructure in high-risk zones. Officials have also cautioned that ongoing rainfall is likely to keep the landslide risk elevated in the coming days.
The District Disaster Management Committee has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and move to safer locations immediately if necessary.
