Kathmandu, June 4, 2025 — On the eve of World Environment Day 2025, UNDP Nepal, in collaboration with Sushila Arts Academy, hosted an inspiring art exhibition titled “Beating the Plastic: From Pollution to Expression.” The event, held in the heart of Kathmandu, creatively amplified this year’s World Environment Day theme: Ending Plastic Pollution.
The exhibition showcased a diverse range of thought-provoking artworks created by both seasoned and budding Nepali artists. These artists transformed discarded plastic waste into powerful pieces of art, symbolizing a collective call to action against one of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.
From intricate sculptures crafted entirely out of single-use plastic to evocative paintings envisioning a sustainable future, the artworks not only highlighted the versatility of plastic as a medium but also its catastrophic impact when mishandled.
“The event is a testament to the power of creativity in raising awareness,” said an attendee, expressing appreciation for the innovative approach. “It challenges us to rethink how we view plastic — not just as waste but as a material that can spark meaningful conversations about our environment.”
The art pieces served as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to transition to more sustainable practices, aligning with global efforts to curb plastic pollution. The event also emphasized the role of communities in spearheading climate action through innovative and artistic expressions.
By transforming pollution into expression and art into action, the exhibition encouraged visitors to engage deeply with environmental issues, turning awareness into inspiration for tangible change.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, serves as a global platform for mobilizing environmental action. This year’s theme resonates with growing global concern over the long-lasting effects of plastic pollution on ecosystems and human health.
UNDP Nepal’s collaboration with Sushila Arts Academy highlights the importance of local initiatives in addressing global challenges, showcasing the profound impact of art in fostering environmental stewardship.
As Nepal and the world commemorate World Environment Day, the exhibition serves as a vivid reminder that creative solutions can pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
