Government Accepts USD 24.26 Million from Green Climate Fund to Address Climate Risks in Nepal

Kathmandu - The Government of Nepal has decided to accept financial assistance of USD 24.26 million from the Green Climate Fund to support efforts aimed at reducing climate change–induced risks and protecting vulnerable communities.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Council of Ministers held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. According to government spokesperson and Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal, the assistance will be implemented through the United Nations Development Programme.
The funding will support a project focused on reducing the risks posed by glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and climate-induced flooding in Nepal. Such disasters have become an increasing concern in the Himalayan region as rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt and increase the likelihood of sudden glacial lake bursts.
The project is expected to strengthen early warning systems, improve disaster preparedness, and protect local livelihoods and property in vulnerable mountain and downstream communities. Nepal is considered one of the countries most exposed to climate change impacts despite contributing only a small share to global greenhouse gas emissions.
Through this initiative, the government aims to enhance climate resilience, reduce disaster risks, and support sustainable development pathways while safeguarding communities living in climate-sensitive areas.
