Lalitpur, Nepal – Marking the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination 2026, FAO Nepal, in collaboration with the Government of Nepal, National Dalit Commission, and Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO), organized a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Caste-Based Discrimination in Agri-Food Systems in Nepal.
The dialogue brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society, development partners, and grassroots organizations to confront persistent inequalities embedded within Nepal’s agri-food systems. The initiative aimed to increase engagement, amplify marginalized voices, and promote inclusive policies that address caste-based discrimination.
Discussions during the event highlighted how unequal access to land, markets, agricultural services, and economic opportunities continues to restrict the full participation of Dalit communities-particularly women-in the agri-food sector. Participants emphasized that such structural barriers not only perpetuate social injustice but also weaken the overall productivity and sustainability of Nepal’s agricultural systems.
Speakers underscored that addressing caste-based disparities is critical to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agri-food systems. Ensuring equitable access to resources, strengthening livelihoods, and creating enabling environments for all farmers were identified as key priorities.
Mr. Ken Shimizu, FAO Representative for Bhutan and Nepal reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s transition toward a more inclusive agri-food system. “Improving access, enhancing opportunities, and ensuring that all farmers-regardless of caste or background-can contribute to and benefit from agricultural transformation is essential for achieving food security and sustainable development,” he noted.
The dialogue aligns with broader national and global efforts to leave no one behind, reinforcing the need for coordinated action to eliminate discrimination and promote social justice within agricultural value chains.
By fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, the initiative represents a significant step toward addressing deep-rooted inequalities and ensuring that Nepal’s agri-food systems are both equitable and future-ready.
