Hailstorm and Heavy Rainfall Damage Crops in Pokhara Valley

Pokhara, Nepal - Several areas of the Pokhara Valley experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by a sudden hailstorm on Saturday afternoon, causing significant damage to vegetable farms and fruit crops and raising concerns among local farmers about potential economic losses.
According to local residents and farmers, the intense hailstorm struck parts of Pokhara and surrounding communities, damaging seasonal vegetables and fruits that were close to harvest. Hailstones fell for a short but intense period, hitting open farmlands and leaving many crops destroyed or severely damaged.
Farmers in vegetable-producing areas around the valley reported that crops such as tomatoes, cauliflower, leafy greens, and other seasonal vegetables were particularly affected. Fruit-bearing plants and young fruit trees also suffered damage due to the impact of hailstones and strong rainfall.
Agriculture remains a crucial livelihood for many households in the Pokhara Valley, where small-scale farmers depend heavily on seasonal vegetable and fruit production. Sudden weather events like hailstorms can quickly wipe out months of labor and investment, leaving farmers vulnerable to financial losses.
Local farmers have expressed concern that such extreme weather patterns appear to be occurring more frequently in recent years. Experts often link the growing unpredictability of weather events-including sudden hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and temperature fluctuations-to broader climate variability affecting mountainous regions of Nepal.
While local authorities and agricultural offices are expected to begin preliminary assessments of crop damage, the full extent of losses has yet to be officially determined. Farmers are calling for timely support, including possible relief measures and improved agricultural insurance mechanisms to help them recover from weather-related disasters.FB_IMG_1773502743262-1773502818.jpg
Environmental analysts note that strengthening climate-resilient agricultural practices, improving early weather warning systems, and expanding crop insurance programs could help reduce the vulnerability of farmers to sudden climatic shocks in the future.
Further updates are expected once field assessments by local authorities and agricultural experts are completed.
