Kathmandu, May 15 – A devastating fire broke out in Makhan Tole, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-24, destroying two houses and claiming the life of an 80-year-old woman yesterday.
The deceased, identified as Bishnu Adhikari of Kavrepalanchok, was trapped in the blaze that erupted early this morning. According to the Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Apil Raj Bohara, the fire began due to a gas leak in a four-story mud and timber house owned by Dayaram Shrestha. The flames quickly spread to an adjacent five-story concrete building owned by Rukesh Shrestha.
The fire, which started around 7 AM, was brought under control by 10 AM after a three-hour-long effort involving multiple rescue teams and six fire engines. Teams from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent further damage. Fire engines from Juddha Fire Brigade, Nepal Army, Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Ramhiti, and Balaju Industrial Area were deployed to the scene.
Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion before noticing the flames engulfing the house. Despite the prompt arrival of rescue teams, the densely built area and the use of flammable construction materials made it challenging to control the fire quickly.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City officials have urged residents to take extra precautions with gas cylinders and electrical appliances to avoid similar incidents.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the damage. Meanwhile, authorities have expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured support to those affected.
This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for improved fire safety measures, particularly in areas with old and closely packed houses.
