Tokha Municipality, located in the northern part of Kathmandu District, observed its 12th establishment day today, marking more than a decade since its formation through the merger of Dhapasi, Jhor Mahankal, Gongabu, Tokha Chandeshwari, and Tokha Saraswati.
Organized with the participation of elected representatives, municipal staff, and local residents, the establishment day program served as a platform to review the municipality’s development journey as well as to articulate its future direction.
Addressing the event, Mayor Prakash Adhikari highlighted the major achievements of Tokha Municipality so far, noting visible progress in local infrastructure development, expansion and upgrading of road networks, improvement in basic health and education services, and strengthening of municipal governance mechanisms. He acknowledged that Tokha, like many municipalities in the Kathmandu Valley, has faced rapid urbanization challenges but has continued efforts to provide effective and inclusive public services.
Mayor Adhikari also outlined the municipality’s future plans, emphasizing planned urban growth, environmental conservation, improved waste management systems, and the promotion of local culture and heritage. According to him, creating employment opportunities at the local level and enhancing citizen participation in development processes remain key priorities for the coming years.
The municipality derives its name from the historic town of Tokha, now encompassed within wards 2 and 3, an area recognized for its cultural, religious, and historical significance. Local leaders stressed the importance of balancing modernization with the preservation of Tokha’s identity and traditional values.
The 12th establishment day celebration concluded with a collective commitment from municipal leadership and residents to continue working toward making Tokha a prosperous, sustainable, and well-managed municipality in the Kathmandu Valley.
