Kathmandu, 9 September 2025
A group of nine embassies based in Nepal have jointly expressed deep concern over the violence that erupted in Kathmandu and other parts of the country yesterday, which resulted in loss of life and injuries during demonstrations.
In a joint statement, the embassies of Australia, Finland, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, and the United States conveyed their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and wished the injured a swift recovery.
“We are deeply saddened by the violence seen in Kathmandu and elsewhere in Nepal today, including the tragic loss of life and injury during demonstrations,” the statement read. “We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, all those affected, and wish those injured a swift and full recovery.”
The governments reaffirmed their strong support for the universal rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, which are cornerstones of democratic societies. They urged all parties in Nepal to exercise maximum restraint, avoid any escalation, and ensure these fundamental rights are upheld.
The joint appeal from the diplomatic missions underlines growing international concern about Nepal’s current political and social tensions. The call for restraint and protection of democratic freedoms comes at a critical moment as the country grapples with balancing public expression and law enforcement during mass protests.
