Kathmandu, August 27, 2025 - The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the country’s leading alpine organization, has elected a new leadership team to guide its activities for the next three years. Tourism entrepreneur Phurba Gyaljen Sherpa has been chosen to lead the association, with the newly formed executive board representing diverse professional backgrounds.
The incoming leadership faces both opportunities and pressing challenges in strengthening Nepal’s mountaineering sector. Despite holding the authority to issue climbing permits for 27 peaks, the NMA has long operated with limited resources. The new leadership is expected to address key priorities ranging from skill-based training for aspiring mountain guides to stronger lobbying efforts with government agencies.
The NMA’s broader mission includes promoting mountain tourism and climbing sports, protecting fragile mountain environments, and preserving the cultural heritage of Himalayan communities. Experts emphasize that effective leadership will be vital in tackling these responsibilities, especially as Nepal continues to attract thousands of international climbers annually.
A major focus area for the association is creating employment opportunities for Nepali youth in mountaineering and related tourism services. Equally important is raising awareness among climbers about environmental conservation and the long-term sustainability of mountain ecosystems.
In addition, the NMA is under growing pressure to establish robust support systems for families affected by mountaineering accidents and to design sustainable assistance programs for businesses operating in the sector.
As the new leadership begins its tenure, stakeholders are watching closely to see how effectively the NMA can balance development, safety, and conservation in Nepal’s rapidly evolving mountaineering industry.
