Mugu, Nepal – In a transformative step towards improving emergency services in Nepal's remote regions, the Nepal Army has completed the construction of a helipad in Putu, Ward 1 of Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality, Mugu district. The new infrastructure aims to revolutionize disaster response and healthcare accessibility for local residents.
On Friday, Lieutenant General Anup Jung Thapa, Commander of the North-Western Division, officially handed over the helipad to Rural Municipality Chairperson Chiring Kyapne Lama during a ceremony. Highlighting the significance of this development, Chairperson Lama expressed gratitude to the Nepal Army, emphasizing the life-saving potential of this facility.
“For years, the people of Mugum Karmarong have suffered due to the lack of timely rescue and medical services during emergencies. Pregnant women and critically ill patients often lost their lives due to inaccessible healthcare. With this helipad, we can ensure swift helicopter services during emergencies,” said Lama.
Enhancing State Presence in Remote Areas
Lieutenant General Thapa reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to supporting remote communities by providing essential infrastructure. "Our priority is to ensure that even the most isolated citizens feel the presence and support of the state. This helipad will play a pivotal role in disaster management, maternity case evacuations, and relief distribution," Thapa stated.
Addressing Risks for Yarsagumba Collectors
The helipad will also significantly benefit the thousands of seasonal Yarsagumba collectors who visit Mugum Karmarong’s high-altitude terrain annually. With freezing temperatures, oxygen scarcity, and frequent health risks, these collectors often require urgent medical assistance. "The helipad will ensure quick rescues and save lives during emergencies," noted Lieutenant Colonel Khim Bahadur Adhikari of the Hanuman Dhwaj Battalion, which coordinated the construction.
Cost-Efficient Construction
The project, completed under the direction of the Hanuman Dhwaj Battalion, was undertaken by Navin Nirman Sewa. Initially estimated at NPR 1,647,630.60, the helipad was completed at a significantly reduced cost of NPR 844,173.60. Construction began on February 8, 2025, and was finished by May 15, 2025.
A Lifeline for Mugu
The newly completed helipad, now under the ownership of the Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality, represents a lifeline for this remote region. It symbolizes the Nepal Army’s unwavering commitment to bridging gaps in healthcare and disaster response, offering hope and security to thousands of residents in one of Nepal’s most isolated areas.
