Lalitpur, Nepal - Lalitpur Metropolitan City has reconstructed the historic Saptapatal Pokhari, restoring the ancient pond to its original form after years of encroachment and alteration.
Recognized as a Lichchhavi-period heritage site, Saptapatal Pokhari is considered one of the important historical and archaeological assets of Lalitpur. For many years, the site had lost much of its original identity, and a building of Namuna Machhindra Secondary School had previously been under construction on the pond area.
The metropolitan city carried out the reconstruction with the objective of preserving the site’s historical, cultural, and archaeological significance while reviving its traditional appearance. The restoration is expected to contribute not only to heritage conservation but also to the promotion of urban cultural tourism in the Kathmandu Valley.
Local authorities believe that the revived Saptapatal Pokhari can become a major tourist destination in Lalitpur, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the city’s rich Lichchhavi-era heritage and traditional water architecture.
The project has been viewed as an important step toward protecting Nepal’s historic ponds and public heritage spaces, many of which have faced increasing pressure from urban expansion and infrastructure development.
