Kathmandu, July 8 - The monsoon system remains active across Nepal, with the country's weather authorities forecasting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and the possibility of heavy to very heavy precipitation in several provinces over the next 24 hours. The forecast also warns of strong winds in parts of the southern plains and snowfall in high Himalayan areas.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the monsoon trough is positioned south of its average location over eastern Nepal, while remaining close to its normal position over western Nepal. This atmospheric pattern is sustaining unstable weather conditions across much of the country.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division reported that moderate rainfall is already occurring in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces, while isolated showers have also been observed in Gandaki and Sudurpashchim provinces.
During the day, generally cloudy conditions are expected nationwide. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many hilly and Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim provinces, as well as in parts of Madhesh Province and the hilly region of Karnali Province. The Himalayan region may also witness moderate rainfall and snowfall in higher elevations.
The forecast indicates that one or two locations in Nepal's hilly region could experience heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of localized flooding, landslides, and road disruptions. Gusty winds are also expected in parts of Madhesh Province and the Terai districts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim, potentially affecting transportation and agriculture.
Weather conditions are expected to remain largely cloudy overnight, with rainfall becoming more widespread. Many areas of Madhesh Province and the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces are forecast to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible in isolated areas of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, raising concerns over flash floods, river level increases, and landslide hazards.
The DHM has urged residents, particularly those living in flood- and landslide-prone areas, to remain alert, exercise necessary precautions, and stay updated with the Department's latest weather advisories. Authorities have also advised travelers and local governments to monitor weather developments closely as active monsoon conditions continue across the country.
