Kathmandu - Nepal’s catastrophic August 26 flash floods have once again exposed one of the defining injustices of the climate crisis: countries that contribute relatively little to global greenhouse-gas emissions can face some of its most devastating consequences.
The disaster, which struck the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors, has killed more than 1,300 people in Nepal and left thousands missing, while destroying homes, roads, bridges, hydropower infrastructure and livelihoods. Scientists say the event was associated with a collapse involving glacial ice and rock, which unleashed a destructive torrent downstream.
Climate change did not single-handedly “cause” this particular flood. Himalayan disasters are produced by multiple interacting factors, including extreme precipitation, glacier and ice instability, rockfall, river dynamics, topography and human exposure. But global warming is changing the background conditions under which these hazards occur.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) reported in March 2026 that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya are losing ice at an accelerating rate, with ice-loss rates having doubled since 2000. The region’s glaciers have lost up to 27 metres of ice thickness since 1975, threatening the water security and safety of billions of people downstream.
Australia’s global fossil-fuel footprint
This raises an important question about global responsibility. Australia is one of the world’s major exporters of coal and liquefied natural gas. Climate Analytics estimates that Australia’s fossil-fuel exports were responsible for about 1.15 billion tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2023, while emissions associated with extracting, processing and transporting those fuels for export added another 46 million tonnes.
Its broader analysis estimates that Australia is responsible for around 4.5% of global fossil CO₂ emissions, with approximately 80% of that footprint linked to fossil-fuel exports. The research estimates cumulative emissions from Australian fossil-fuel exports at about 30 billion tonnes of CO₂ between 1961 and 2023.
These emissions do not remain an “Australian” problem. Once coal and gas are burned elsewhere, the resulting greenhouse gases mix throughout the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
That warming affects distant and vulnerable systems-including the Himalayas.
A warming Himalaya, a vulnerable Nepal
The Hindu Kush Himalaya is warming faster than the global average in many high-altitude environments. Rising temperatures accelerate glacier loss, alter snowfall and rainfall patterns, degrade permafrost and can destabilize mountain slopes. ICIMOD says rapidly changing glaciers, snow and permafrost are contributing to increasing risks from glacial lake outburst floods, avalanches, debris flows and landslides.
The consequences extend far beyond Nepal. The Himalayan cryosphere supports water, agriculture, ecosystems, energy production and livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people in the mountains and more than two billion people downstream.
Nepal, meanwhile, contributes only a very small share of global greenhouse-gas emissions while facing extraordinary exposure to climate-related hazards. Recent international reporting has highlighted the disproportionate burden carried by Nepal as its mountains warm and extreme disasters become increasingly destructive.
From climate responsibility to climate justice
The central issue is therefore not whether Australia “caused” Nepal’s flood. It did not.
The deeper question is whether countries and industries that have benefited substantially from fossil-fuel extraction and consumption should do more to help vulnerable nations cope with the consequences of a warming planet.
For Nepal, that means moving beyond emergency relief toward climate finance, loss-and-damage support, resilient infrastructure, glacier and permafrost monitoring, early-warning systems and transboundary disaster cooperation.
Australia and other major fossil-fuel-producing and consuming economies have a responsibility to accelerate the transition away from coal, oil and gas while supporting vulnerable countries facing unavoidable climate impacts.
Nepal cannot prevent global warming alone. Nor can it monitor every unstable glacier, mountain slope and transboundary river without international cooperation.
The lesson from the Himalayas is increasingly clear: the atmosphere is shared, the climate crisis is global, but the losses are profoundly unequal.
For Nepal, climate justice must mean more than sympathy after a disaster. It must mean responsibility, finance, technology, preparedness and action before the next mountain collapses.
