Kathmandu, July 3 - The nationwide expansion of this year's monsoon has brought widespread rainfall across most parts of Nepal, providing much-needed relief to farmers and accelerating paddy transplantation during the peak planting season. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the rainfall that began on Tuesday is expected to continue until the middle of next week, with moderate to heavy rainfall forecast in several provinces.
The monsoon, which entered Nepal on June 19 (Ashar 5)-six days later than the average onset date-has now spread across the entire country after taking 12 days to reach all regions. Meteorologists say the complete establishment of the monsoon has displaced the westerly weather system, resulting in widespread rainfall and improved moisture conditions for agriculture.
The rainfall has been welcomed by farmers across the country, as water has reached agricultural fields, making paddy transplantation significantly easier. With favourable soil moisture, farmers have intensified planting activities in both the Terai and hill regions during the crucial Asar cultivation period.
The DHM has also reported substantial rainfall in several districts over recent days. As of Thursday afternoon, the highest recorded rainfall was 118.2 millimetres in Banganga, Kapilvastu. Earlier, 178 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Kanchanpur on Wednesday, while 95.5 millimetres was measured in Manpur of Bardiya on Tuesday. On Monday, 122.2 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Bhorletar, Jhapa.
Weather forecasts indicate that moderate rainfall is likely to continue across most parts of Nepal until Saturday. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations, particularly in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces on Friday, while Bagmati, Gandaki, and Sudurpashchim provinces may experience heavy rainfall at some places on Saturday. Authorities have advised the public to remain alert for possible localized flooding, landslides, and other monsoon-related hazards while welcoming the positive impact of the rains on agricultural activities.
