Kathmandu, June 26 - Nepal's climbing community is preparing for another major sporting event as the Top Rope and Lead Open Climbing Championship 2082 is scheduled to take place on Asar 27-28 (July 11-12, 2026) at the Gateway Adventure Hub Climbing Centre in Jagdol-4, Gokarneshwor, Kathmandu.
The championship is being jointly organized by the Kathmandu Valley Special Committee (KVSC) under the Nepal Climbing Sport Association (NCSA) and the Bagmati Province Nepal Climbing Sport Association. According to the organizers, the event aims to expand the popularity of sport climbing in Nepal while identifying and nurturing a new generation of competitive climbers.
The competition will feature two disciplines-Top Rope Climbing and Lead Climbing. The Top Rope category has been introduced primarily to encourage beginners and emerging athletes, while the Lead Climbing event will be conducted as an open competition for both men and women. Participation is open to Nepali citizens aged 17 years and above.
Registration fees have been set at NPR 500 for the Top Rope category and NPR 2,500 for the Lead Climbing category. Organizers have also announced a NPR 500 registration discount for Lead Climbing participants who submit a recommendation letter from a recognized climbing wall, club, or related institution, along with their coach's name and contact details.
Prize money has been announced for both categories. Winners of the Top Rope competition will receive NPR 10,000, NPR 8,000, and NPR 5,000 for first, second, and third places, respectively. In the Lead Climbing category, the top three finishers will receive NPR 50,000, NPR 30,000, and NPR 20,000. Additionally, ten outstanding athletes will be recognized with special talent awards.
To ensure fair competition, athletes who have previously participated in official competitions organized by the Nepal Climbing Sport Association will not be eligible to compete in the Top Rope category. Organizers have stated that any violation of this rule will result in automatic disqualification.
Sport climbing has gained increasing recognition internationally since becoming an Olympic discipline, and Nepal has been expanding its efforts to develop the sport through national competitions and athlete development initiatives. Organizers believe the upcoming championship will help strengthen Nepal's competitive climbing ecosystem, discover promising young talent, and inspire greater youth participation in adventure sports.
The championship is also expected to contribute to Nepal's long-term goal of producing athletes capable of competing successfully at regional, international, and Olympic levels.
