Government Holds High-Level Meeting to Address Cooking Gas Supply Concerns

Kathmandu, August 4, 2026 - The Government of Nepal has initiated high-level discussions to address concerns surrounding the recent shortage of cooking gas observed in the market. A special meeting was held on Tuesday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Govinda Bahadur Karki.

The meeting brought together secretaries from various ministries, officials of the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), and representatives of the gas industry. Participants held extensive discussions on the causes behind the supply concerns and explored immediate measures to ensure smooth distribution across the country.

According to officials participating in the meeting, gas entrepreneurs stated that there is no actual shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the market. They explained that demand had risen sharply after the distribution of cylinders refilled from partially used cylinders resumed, leading many consumers to store more cylinders than required for regular household use.

To address the situation and maintain a stable supply during the upcoming festive season, the meeting decided to increase LPG imports and strengthen coordination among the concerned agencies to make the distribution system more effective and transparent.

Chief Secretary Karki emphasized the need for continuous coordination among stakeholders and expressed the government’s commitment to pursuing long-term solutions to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

The discussion comes at a time when cooking gas availability has become a matter of public concern in several parts of the country, with consumers seeking assurance that supplies will remain uninterrupted during the approaching festival period.

The government has indicated that further consultations with stakeholders will continue in the coming days as part of broader efforts to improve energy supply management and protect consumers from unnecessary market disruptions.
