Karnali, Nepal - The Pushpalal (Mid-Hill) Highway, one of Nepal’s largest national infrastructure projects, continues to strengthen connectivity across the country’s diverse hill regions, linking major river basins including the Tamor, Sunkoshi, Tamakoshi, Budhigandaki, Kali Gandaki, Bheri, and Karnali. Stretching from Chiyabhanjyang in Panchthar district in the east to Jhulaghat in Baitadi district in the far west, the highway traverses Nepal’s middle hills and connects numerous rural settlements that were once isolated from major transportation networks.
Often referred to as the backbone of Nepal’s hill region, the highway has been designed to improve mobility, facilitate access to markets, education, healthcare, and government services, while promoting balanced regional development. The route passes through diverse landscapes, connecting communities situated between the Himalayan range in the north and the Terai plains in the south.
According to technical studies conducted for the project, the highway intersects numerous major river systems and has incorporated environmental considerations such as slope stabilization, bio-engineering measures, drainage management, flood control, and conservation of local ecosystems. These measures aim to reduce environmental impacts and enhance the long-term sustainability of road infrastructure in Nepal’s fragile mountain terrain.
The highway has also gained increasing significance as an alternative transportation corridor during disruptions on other major road networks. Recent road closures and damage on key highways have highlighted the strategic importance of the Mid-Hill Highway in maintaining connectivity between eastern, central, and western Nepal.
While challenges such as landslides, road maintenance, and environmental vulnerabilities remain, the Pushpalal (Mid-Hill) Highway represents a major national effort to improve transportation resilience and support socio-economic development across Nepal’s hill districts. Experts emphasize that continued investment in environmentally responsible construction and maintenance practices will be essential to ensure the highway delivers long-term benefits for both people and nature.
