Nepal Government Warns Public Against Consuming Wild Mushrooms During Monsoon

Kathmandu, July 20 - Nepal's Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene has urged the public to refrain from consuming wild mushrooms during the monsoon season, warning that poisonous varieties found in forests can cause severe illness and even death.
As rainfall increases, wild mushrooms grow abundantly across forests and grasslands. However, the ministry cautioned that not all naturally occurring mushrooms are safe for human consumption, and distinguishing edible species from poisonous ones is extremely difficult for the general public.
In a public awareness message, Dr. Radhika Thapaliya, Director of the National Health Education, Information and Communication Centre under the ministry, stated that consuming toxic wild mushrooms may lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, and serious damage to the liver and kidneys. In some cases, mushroom poisoning can be fatal.
The ministry further emphasized that the toxins present in poisonous mushrooms are not completely destroyed through cooking, making them hazardous even after preparation. For this reason, the public has been strongly advised never to consume mushrooms collected from forests or other wild areas.
Health authorities have also urged anyone experiencing unusual symptoms after eating mushrooms to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility without delay, as prompt treatment can be lifesaving.
The advisory comes as monsoon conditions promote the rapid growth of wild mushrooms across many parts of Nepal, increasing the risk of accidental poisoning among foragers and local communities.
