Severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak has created an unexpected public safety crisis in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region after more than 800 farmed snakes escaped from a flooded breeding facility in Hengzhou, adding a new dimension to an already devastating natural disaster.
According to local officials quoted by Chinese media, floodwaters inundated a snake farm in Dengwei Village, Yunbiao Township, allowing an estimated 800 to 900 snakes to escape into surrounding communities. While many of the escaped reptiles are believed to be non-venomous water snakes, authorities confirmed that venomous species, including cobras, were also being raised at local farms, prompting heightened concern among residents and emergency responders.
The flooding has reportedly led to snakebite incidents among residents trapped by rising waters. Officials have urged the public not to attempt to catch the reptiles themselves and to immediately report any sightings to local authorities.
The snake escape occurred as Typhoon Maysak unleashed torrential rainfall across Guangxi, causing rivers to overflow, damaging reservoirs, inundating communities and forcing large-scale evacuations.
