Nepal Strengthens Gender-Based Violence Response Through Multi-Partner Programme

Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal has made significant progress in strengthening its response to gender-based violence (GBV) through the Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response Programme, a collaborative initiative that has supported survivor-centred services and institutional capacity for more than six years.
Jointly financed by the Swiss and Norwegian governments through their respective embassies in Nepal and implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the Government of Nepal, the programme has focused on improving prevention, protection and response mechanisms for women, girls and marginalized communities affected by violence.
During the programme's final Project Advisory Committee meeting, representatives from government ministries, development partners and key stakeholders reviewed the programme's achievements, assessed its impact, and discussed strategies to sustain and expand its results in the coming years. The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening national systems, ensuring continued access to quality survivor-centred services, and reinforcing coordination among government institutions and development partners.
The initiative has contributed to enhancing access to essential health, psychosocial, legal and referral services while supporting government efforts to build more effective and inclusive mechanisms for preventing and responding to gender-based violence across Nepal.
The programme has been implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population and the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security, with support from development partners including the Embassy of Switzerland in Nepal and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
According to UNFPA Nepal, the programme's achievements provide a strong foundation for continued national efforts to eliminate gender-based violence and ensure that survivors receive timely, accessible and dignified support.
