World’s Highest Officially Recorded Temperature Remains 56.7°C as of June 2026

Kathmandu, June 28: As global temperatures continue to rise and many regions experience increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, the highest officially recognized air temperature ever recorded on Earth remains 56.7 degrees Celsius (134 degrees Fahrenheit). The record was measured on 10 July 1913 at Furnace Creek (formerly Greenland Ranch) in Death Valley, California, United States, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The WMO continues to recognize the 1913 Death Valley observation as the official global temperature record, although some meteorologists have questioned the accuracy of the historic measurement. Despite these scientific discussions, no higher temperature has been officially validated by the WMO as of June 2026.
Recent years have witnessed numerous extreme heat events across the globe, including severe heatwaves in Europe during June 2026 that set national temperature records in several countries and caused significant impacts on public health, infrastructure, agriculture, and ecosystems. Climate scientists and international organizations warn that human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events worldwide.
The WMO has also warned that the period from 2026 to 2030 is likely to bring even warmer global average temperatures, underscoring the need for stronger climate action, improved adaptation measures, and enhanced resilience to protect communities from the growing risks associated with extreme heat.
