Kathmandu, July 3 - The inspiring transformation of a teenager from Dhanusha District is demonstrating how youth empowerment and rights-based education can help address deeply rooted social challenges, including child marriage, gender-based violence, the dowry system, and caste-based discrimination.
Rahul Kumar Yadav, a resident of Parsahi Tole in Ward No. 13 of Sabaila Municipality, has emerged as a young community advocate after participating in the Agent of Change Class under the Child Marriage Reduction Project, implemented by Aasman Nepal in partnership with Plan International Nepal. The initiative aims to equip adolescents with knowledge and leadership skills to challenge harmful social practices and promote children's rights.
According to the project information, Rahul's life has undergone a remarkable transformation since joining the programme in 2022. Previously struggling with negative peer influence, school absenteeism, substance use, and disciplinary issues, he gradually adopted a more responsible lifestyle through regular participation in sessions focused on gender equality, child rights, women's rights, and the prevention of sexual violence.
His commitment to positive social change later earned him a leadership role as Treasurer of his school's Child Club, where he became actively involved in awareness campaigns and child rights advocacy.
One of Rahul's most notable contributions has been his active involvement in preventing child marriage. By contacting Nepal's child helpline (1098) and coordinating with the police, he successfully helped stop the marriage of a 16-year-old girl. Since then, he has reportedly played an important role in preventing twenty- five child marriages by working closely with friends and community members to monitor vulnerable situations.
Beyond child marriage prevention, Rahul has also been raising awareness on menstrual hygiene, sanitation, and the use of sanitary pads among his family and community. He has become an advocate for women's dignity, safety, and equal rights while promoting respectful behaviour among his peers.
His efforts have received recognition from teachers, fellow students, local representatives, and community members. Awareness activities led by the Child Club, including street dramas, have contributed to wider public discussions on children's rights and gender equality, although local leaders have also acknowledged the risks sometimes faced by young social campaigners.
Currently studying in Grade 11 at SM College in Janakpurdham, Rahul aspires to become a community facilitator and continue working for positive social transformation.
His journey reflects the potential of empowering adolescents with education, mentorship, and opportunities for leadership. As Nepal continues its efforts to reduce child marriage and promote gender equality, stories like Rahul's demonstrate how informed and motivated young people can become catalysts for lasting social change. Research and development organizations have consistently emphasized that community awareness, education, and youth engagement remain among the most effective approaches to reducing child marriage and protecting children's rights in Nepal.
