Everest Spring Season Sets Historic Record as Nepal Celebrates Sherpa Contributions

Kathmandu, Nepal - Nepal’s spring mountaineering season has concluded with a historic achievement on Mount Everest, as at least 1,008 climbers from around the world successfully reached the summit of the world’s highest peak, setting a new record for successful ascents in Everest’s climbing history. The season also witnessed record numbers of climbing permits issued and significant revenue generation for the country’s tourism sector.
According to tourism authorities, the government collected more than Rs 1 billion in royalty revenue from Everest climbing permits alone, highlighting the growing economic importance of mountain tourism to Nepal. The record-breaking season attracted climbers from dozens of countries and reaffirmed Nepal’s position as a premier destination for high-altitude adventure tourism.
While the season was largely successful, it was not without tragedy. Several climbers lost their lives due to altitude-related illnesses and mountaineering accidents, underscoring the risks associated with climbing in the extreme conditions of the Himalayas. Safety experts have continued to call for stronger preparedness measures and responsible expedition management.
The season also produced several notable milestones. Among them was the achievement of veteran Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa, who extended his own world record by summiting Everest for the 32nd time. Other climbers and Sherpas also set personal and international records during the season.
On the occasion of International Everest Day, observed on May 29, special recognition was given to Sherpa rope-fixing teams and support staff whose work is crucial to the success and safety of Everest expeditions. Sherpas are responsible for establishing climbing routes, fixing ropes, and preparing camps, often facing some of the mountain’s most dangerous conditions before other climbers begin their summit attempts.
The successful season has also helped strengthen confidence in Nepal’s mountaineering industry amid global uncertainties and regional geopolitical tensions. Tourism stakeholders believe the strong turnout demonstrates the resilience of Nepal’s adventure tourism sector and the enduring global appeal of the Himalayas.
Experts note that the achievements of the 2026 spring season reflect not only the determination of climbers but also the dedication of local communities, guides, and Sherpas whose expertise continues to make Himalayan mountaineering possible. As Nepal looks ahead to future climbing seasons, the record-breaking year is expected to further boost the country's reputation as the gateway to the world's highest peaks.
