Flood-Damaged Trishuli Suspension Bridge Under Repair as Access Routes Are Restored

NUWAKOT/DHADING, Nepal - Repair work has begun on a suspension bridge over the Trishuli River connecting Keurini in Belkotgadhi-5, Nuwakot, and Gagate in Galchhi Rural Municipality-1, Dhading, after the structure was damaged by floodwaters originating from the Bhote Koshi River.
The bridge is among the vital local crossings affected by the catastrophic August 26 Bhote Koshi-Trishuli flood disaster, which caused extensive destruction of roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and settlements along the river corridor. Recent reporting indicates that dozens of bridges and more than 40 kilometres of roads were damaged across the affected areas.
According to the Suspension Bridge Division, Lalitpur, although concrete bridges on the Rasuwa and Nuwakot sides suffered damage, the suspension bridge between Keurini and Gagate remains suitable for restoration. Technicians are therefore working to repair the damaged sections and bring the crossing back into operation as quickly as possible.

Restoring suspension bridges is particularly important for communities living along the river valleys, where bridges are more than transport infrastructure: they provide access to schools, health services, markets, farms and emergency assistance. Following the floods, the government has initiated repair work on multiple damaged suspension bridges, while reconstruction of larger road and motorable bridges remains a major challenge.
The continuing repair effort also highlights a broader lesson from the disaster: recovery cannot simply mean rebuilding what was lost. Infrastructure along Himalayan rivers needs to be reconstructed with stronger risk assessments, improved flood and landslide mapping, resilient designs and effective early-warning systems.
For communities of Nuwakot, Dhading and the wider Trishuli corridor, the reopening of even one bridge represents an important step toward restoring mobility, livelihoods and social connections after one of Nepal's most devastating recent flood disasters.
