  • River Cleaning Campaign Intensifies in Kathmandu to Address Flood Risks
River Cleaning Campaign Intensifies in Kathmandu to Address Flood Risks

Kathmandu - The ongoing river cleaning campaign in the Dhobi Khola corridor has gained momentum as authorities continue efforts to restore the river’s natural flow and improve urban sanitation. On Sunday, a JCB excavator was deployed to remove accumulated garbage and debris from beneath the Bawarmahal bridge, a critical section of the river system.
According to Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle persistent environmental and urban challenges linked to river pollution. Years of unmanaged waste disposal and encroachment have severely obstructed water flow in sections of Dhobi Khola, increasing the risk of flooding during the monsoon season.
Officials stated that the primary objectives of the campaign include improving river cleanliness, removing physical barriers that hinder water movement, and reducing flood vulnerability in surrounding settlements. The Bawarmahal area has been identified as one of the key intervention points due to heavy waste accumulation and its strategic location within the city’s drainage network.
Urban planners and environmental observers have long emphasized that river restoration in Kathmandu requires not only periodic clean-up drives but also sustained waste management practices, strict monitoring of illegal dumping, and community participation.
While the current clean-up campaign marks a positive step, experts warn that long-term success will depend on integrated urban planning and public awareness to prevent the reoccurrence of pollution.
The Dhobi Khola, a tributary that flows through densely populated areas of Kathmandu, remains a vital yet vulnerable urban waterway. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing such interventions, especially ahead of the monsoon season when flood risks significantly increase.
