Suspension Bridge Raises Safety Concerns Less Than Two Months After Completion in Syangja

Syangja, Nepal - A newly constructed suspension bridge connecting Charang and Saundi in Bhirkot Municipality-9, Syangja, has raised serious safety concerns after reportedly becoming hazardous less than two months after its completion.
Local residents have complained that the bridge has shown signs of failure, prompting growing questions over its construction quality, site selection, technical design and cost estimation. The condition of the structure has caused concern among people who rely on the bridge for regular movement between the two settlements.
Residents say such a newly completed public infrastructure project should not deteriorate so quickly and have called for an immediate technical inspection and an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the bridge’s condition.
They have also demanded that authorities examine the project’s design, construction materials, workmanship, supervision and expenditure records to determine whether established engineering and procurement standards were followed.
The incident has renewed concerns about the quality and accountability of rural infrastructure projects, where bridges and roads are often essential lifelines for communities. Residents have urged the concerned authorities to identify those responsible for any negligence or irregularities and take action in accordance with the law.
However, allegations regarding poor construction or financial irregularities should be confirmed through an independent technical and administrative investigation before responsibility is assigned.
For local communities, the immediate priority remains clear: the bridge must be properly inspected, public safety must be ensured, and accountability must follow if negligence or substandard construction is established.
