Pollution from Firkekhola Threatens the Ecological Health of Phewa Lake

Pokhara, Nepal - The growing inflow of waste from the Firkekhola stream is posing a serious environmental threat to Phewa Lake, one of Nepal’s most iconic freshwater lakes and a major attraction in the tourist hub of Pokhara.
Recent observations indicate that Firkekhola, which flows through the densely populated areas of Pokhara Bazaar, is carrying increasing amounts of plastic waste, sediment, and debris directly into the lake. The attached image highlights visible signs of pollution, including scattered plastic materials along the riverbanks and murky water entering the lake system.
Environmental experts warn that the continuous deposition of stones, soil, and unmanaged solid waste is accelerating sedimentation in the lake. This not only reduces the lake’s depth and water quality but also threatens aquatic biodiversity and the overall ecological balance. If left unchecked, such trends could gradually transform sections of Phewa Lake into landfill-like zones.
Local stakeholders have long raised concerns about weak waste management systems, unregulated urban runoff, and the lack of effective monitoring mechanisms along tributaries like Firkekhola. During the monsoon season, the situation is expected to worsen as increased water flow carries larger volumes of waste into the lake.
Phewa Lake holds both environmental and economic significance, supporting tourism, livelihoods, and cultural identity in Pokhara. However, the rising pollution levels highlight an urgent need for coordinated action among local governments, environmental agencies, and communities. Measures such as improved waste management infrastructure, river clean-up campaigns, and stricter enforcement of environmental regulations are increasingly seen as critical to preserving the lake.
Without immediate intervention, experts caution that the long-term sustainability of this vital ecosystem could be at serious risk.
