World Water Day 2026 Highlights Urgent Link Between Water Access and Gender Equality

Kathmandu, March 22, 2026 - The global community is marking World Water Day 2026 today with a strong focus on the theme “Water and Gender,” drawing attention to how unequal access to water continues to affect women and girls disproportionately across the world.
Observed annually since 1993 under the leadership of the United Nations, World Water Day aims to raise awareness about freshwater conservation and advance progress toward Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6, which calls for clean water and sanitation for all.
This year’s theme underscores a critical reality: in many parts of the world, women and girls are primarily responsible for collecting water, often spending hours each day walking long distances. This not only limits their access to education and employment but also exposes them to health and safety risks. According to global estimates, billions of people still lack reliable access to safe drinking water, reflecting a widening gap in water equity.
Experts emphasize that water insecurity is being intensified by climate change, population growth, and unplanned urbanization. The growing pressure on water resources has led to warnings of a global “water crisis,” where demand increasingly outpaces sustainable supply. In this context, gender-inclusive water management is being recognized as essential for effective and lasting solutions.
In Nepal, the theme holds particular relevance. Despite significant progress in water supply systems, many rural and remote communities still face seasonal shortages and inadequate sanitation facilities. Women in these areas continue to shoulder the burden of water collection and household water management. Climate-induced changes, including erratic rainfall patterns and glacier retreat, are further complicating water availability in the Himalayan region.
Development practitioners stress that empowering women in water governance - from local user committees to national policymaking - can lead to more equitable and efficient resource management. Ensuring access to safe water is not only a matter of public health but also a foundation for social justice, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
As World Water Day 2026 is observed globally, stakeholders are calling for stronger collaboration, increased investment, and inclusive policies to ensure that safe water is accessible to all - regardless of gender or geography.
