Dhulikhel, Nepal - The Department of Environmental Engineering under the School of Engineering at Kathmandu University has announced the launch of Nepal’s first Master of Engineering (M.E.) program in Green Infrastructure Engineering, a significant academic initiative aimed at promoting climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable infrastructure development.
The newly introduced graduate program comes at a time when Nepal is facing increasing climate vulnerabilities, rapid urbanization, and mounting pressure on natural resources. By integrating green and nature-based solutions into mainstream engineering education, the university seeks to prepare a new generation of professionals capable of designing infrastructure systems that are resilient, adaptive, and environmentally responsible.
According to the program outline, the M.E. in Green Infrastructure Engineering will focus on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, life cycle assessment, circular economy principles, and sustainable urban systems. The curriculum is structured as a 60-credit program, including core courses, interdisciplinary electives, and a research-based thesis component. Field studies and applied research projects will form a strong part of the academic framework.
The program is open to both Nepali and international applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, architecture, or related disciplines, meeting the academic standards set by Kathmandu University’s postgraduate regulations.
Green infrastructure - which emphasizes ecosystem-based approaches such as sustainable drainage systems, watershed management, urban green spaces, and low-carbon infrastructure - is increasingly recognized worldwide as a practical pathway to address climate risks while enhancing economic and social resilience. In Nepal’s context, where floods, landslides, urban heat stress, and water management challenges are intensifying, the need for specialized expertise in this field has become more urgent.
By launching this program, Kathmandu University positions itself at the forefront of sustainable engineering education in Nepal. The initiative aligns with global sustainability goals and reflects growing academic and policy attention toward resilient city planning and environmental stewardship.
Admission details are expected to follow the university’s academic calendar.
With this development, Nepal takes a noteworthy step toward strengthening institutional capacity in green infrastructure planning - a sector likely to play a decisive role in the country’s long-term sustainable development trajectory.
