  • Forest Fire Preparedness Question Raised as Dry Season Intensifies in Nepal
Forest Fire Preparedness Question Raised as Dry Season Intensifies in Nepal

Kathmandu - A public message circulating on social media has drawn urgent attention to forest fire preparedness across Nepal, asking a direct question to local communities: “Have you created a fire line in the forest near your village settlement? It’s already late…” The message also calls on the Ministry of Home Affairs to respond proactively as the dry season heightens wildfire risks.
With rising temperatures, prolonged dry spells, and increasing human activity in forest-adjacent areas, the threat of forest fires has intensified in many districts. Fire lines - locally known as Agnirekha - are cleared strips of land designed to prevent or slow the spread of wildfires. Experts consider them one of the most practical and cost-effective preventive measures, especially in community-managed forests.
The issue directly concerns the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The authority is responsible for coordinating disaster preparedness, response, and risk reduction efforts nationwide. Forest fires are categorized as recurring seasonal disasters in Nepal, particularly during pre-monsoon months.
According to disaster management officials, forest fires not only destroy biodiversity and wildlife habitats but also threaten nearby settlements, agricultural land, and public infrastructure. Smoke pollution from large-scale fires significantly affects air quality and public health, especially in urban centers.
Community forest user groups have historically played a vital role in building and maintaining fire lines. However, delays in preparation, lack of coordinated action, and insufficient awareness remain persistent challenges in several regions.
Environmental analysts stress that prevention must begin at the local level. Early creation of fire lines, removal of dry leaf litter, community patrols, and public awareness campaigns can substantially reduce the scale of damage. They also emphasize the need for stronger coordination between local governments, forest offices, and national disaster management authorities.
As the dry season progresses, the message serves as a reminder that disaster preparedness is not solely a government responsibility but a shared duty between authorities and communities.
Ecosphere News will continue to monitor developments related to forest fire preparedness and disaster risk reduction across Nepal.
