Landslide Blocks Kaligandaki Corridor in Gulmi; Nighttime Traffic Restricted During Monsoon

Gulmi, Nepal July 20 - Continuous rainfall has triggered a major landslide that has blocked the Kaligandaki Corridor in Gulmi district, disrupting transportation along one of western Nepal's key road networks as authorities also enforce nighttime traffic restrictions due to increasing monsoon-related hazards.
The landslide occurred at Upper Khanda in Harmichaur, Ward No. 1 of Kaligandaki Rural Municipality, along the Harmichaur-Arbeni road section. Large volumes of rocks and debris fell from above the roadway early Monday morning, completely obstructing vehicular movement.
Local resident Basudev Pandey said the road has remained blocked since early morning after incessant rainfall triggered the landslide.
According to Ward No. 1 Chairperson Lalu Prasad Pandey, an excavator has been dispatched from Purtighat to clear the debris. However, reopening the road is expected to take some time. The obstruction has halted both short- and long-distance passenger and freight vehicles.
Meanwhile, the District Administration Office, Gulmi, has prohibited vehicular movement on the Gulmi section of the Kaligandaki Corridor from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. throughout the monsoon season. Chief District Officer Badrinath Gaire issued the notice, citing the persistent risk of landslides and falling rocks along the corridor during nighttime hours.
The restriction follows a decision of the District Security Committee made on Asar 15 (Nepali calendar) and applies to the road stretch from the Harmichaur-Mirmi road junction in Ward No. 1 of Kaligandaki Rural Municipality to Dhus, the border between Gulmi and Baglung districts.
Authorities have urged travelers using the corridor during permitted daytime hours to exercise maximum caution. In case of emergencies, the public has been advised to contact the Disaster Rescue Hotline (1449), Nepal Police (100), Armed Police Force (1114), or the nearest police unit.
The latest incident underscores the heightened risk of landslides across Nepal during the monsoon season, when prolonged rainfall frequently disrupts transport networks, threatens communities, and hampers emergency response efforts.
