Acting Chief Emphasizes Continuity and Strengthening of Waste Management Practices in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Nepal - Acting Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), Sunita Dangol, has directed officials of the Environment Management Department to ensure that no weaknesses emerge in the city’s waste management cycle, stressing the need to sustain and strengthen existing practices in urban sanitation and environmental management.
During a departmental interaction held as part of KMC’s ongoing review of progress made by its various divisions, Dangol emphasized the importance of continuing source-based waste segregation, along with the separate collection, transportation, and final disposal of segregated waste. She urged officials to maintain operational efficiency and safeguard the achievements already made in the sector.
“The practices we have adopted in waste classification at the source and its systematic management must continue without compromise,” Dangol said, adding that any decline in performance or capacity would undermine broader efforts toward urban cleanliness and environmental improvement.
As part of the review process, officials from the Environment Management Department briefed the Acting Chief on the outcomes of their ongoing initiatives. Dangol assured departmental staff of her support, noting that if policy-level interventions are required to facilitate smoother implementation, the metropolitan leadership would provide the necessary coordination and assistance.
Highlighting the importance of institutional capacity, Dangol stated that there should be no reduction in the effectiveness of good practices, deployed human resources, or the tools and equipment mobilized for sanitation, cleanliness, and environmental enhancement in the city.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has, in recent years, placed increased emphasis on structured waste management, particularly through source segregation and improved logistical systems. The latest directive signals the city leadership’s intent to consolidate these gains while addressing emerging operational and policy challenges to ensure sustainable urban environmental management.
