Nepal Reopens 18 Flood-Damaged Suspension Bridges Along Bhotekoshi-Trishuli Corridor

Kathmandu, October 17, 2026 - Eighteen suspension bridges damaged by flooding along Nepal’s Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river corridor have been repaired and brought back into operation, restoring vital pedestrian connections for communities in the flood-affected areas.
According to reports citing the Suspension Bridge Division Office under the Department of Local Infrastructure Development, all 18 bridges have been repaired and are now operational. Approximately NPR 55 million was spent on the repair work.
The floods caused significant damage to 11 suspension bridges, while seven others sustained relatively minor damage. Repairs to the severely damaged bridges included straightening twisted cables, replacing handrail cables, installing new steel decks and beams, and restoring side nets. The remaining seven bridges were reopened following minor maintenance.
The restored bridges connect settlements across Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts. Among the bridges receiving major repairs were the Pimaltar–Jagarama bridge connecting Nuwakot and Dhading, the Foresetar bridge linking Belkotgadhi in Nuwakot with Galchhi in Dhading, and the Jiling bridge connecting Belkotgadhi with Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot.
The reopening of these crossings is expected to make daily movement easier for residents who depend on suspension bridges to reach markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services. Restoring these connections is also an important step towards helping communities recover from the widespread disruption caused by the floods.
Although the bridges have resumed operation, the broader recovery of flood-affected areas remains important. Continued investment in resilient infrastructure, effective disaster preparedness and timely maintenance will be essential to reducing the vulnerability of communities living along Nepal’s river corridors.
For Nepal’s mountain and river-valley communities, suspension bridges are more than transport infrastructure: they are essential lifelines connecting people to services, livelihoods and opportunities.
Ecosphere News will continue to follow developments in disaster recovery, infrastructure restoration and community resilience across Nepal.
