KFC Opens Nepal’s First Green Highway Outlet at Kurintar, Marking 16 Years in the Country

Kurintar, Nepal - Global fast-food brand KFC has expanded its footprint in Nepal with the opening of its 25th outlet and first-ever highway restaurant at Kurintar, marking 16 years of operation in the country.
The newly inaugurated outlet is being described as Nepal’s first “green” KFC, featuring a fully electric kitchen designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower operational emissions. Located along a major highway corridor, the restaurant is aimed at serving long-distance travellers, tourists, and commuters moving between key regions of the country.
According to the company, the Kurintar outlet offers seating capacity for 110 guests, making it one of the larger KFC locations outside urban centers. The highway store model reflects a growing shift in Nepal’s hospitality and food service sector, where brands are increasingly targeting transit hubs rather than limiting operations to major cities.
Beyond infrastructure and expansion, the outlet has also generated local employment opportunities, with 15 women employed at the Kurintar branch. This aligns with broader efforts within Nepal’s private sector to promote women’s participation in service and hospitality industries, particularly outside Kathmandu Valley.
KFC entered the Nepali market in 2009 and has since steadily expanded across major cities and commercial hubs. The opening of a highway-based, energy-efficient outlet signals a strategic move toward sustainable operations and geographic diversification, at a time when environmental responsibility and inclusive employment are becoming key considerations in business growth.
While fast-food expansion continues to raise questions globally about health and sustainability, initiatives such as electric kitchens and localized employment suggest a gradual shift toward more responsible operational models within Nepal’s growing food service industry.
