Nepali Startup NEECO Introduces Edible Cups to Help Reduce Single-Use Plastic Waste

Kathmandu, Nepal - A young Nepali startup, NEECO (Nepal Eco Creation), is aiming to contribute to Nepal's growing movement for sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics by introducing edible cups designed for beverages and desserts.
According to the company, NEECO was established in 2025 by Sirisha Kunwar and two other co-founders in Kathmandu with the vision of developing environmentally responsible products that help reduce plastic waste through innovative solutions.
The startup's flagship product is an edible cup, which is designed to be consumed after use, minimizing waste while offering consumers a unique and eco-friendly experience. The founders say the idea emerged from their desire to create a practical replacement for disposable plastic cups while making sustainability more engaging for everyday users.
NEECO states that its edible cups are made from wheat flour and corn starch, are 100 percent edible and free from added chemicals, and are capable of holding hot beverages for approximately one hour under normal conditions. The cups are also available in different flavours and are suitable for serving tea, coffee, desserts, and cold beverages.
The introduction of edible cups reflects a broader global trend toward sustainable packaging and circular economy solutions as businesses and consumers seek alternatives to conventional single-use plastics. Such innovations have the potential to reduce plastic pollution while encouraging more environmentally conscious consumption.
While the long-term commercial adoption of edible packaging will depend on factors such as consumer acceptance, affordability, food safety standards, and production scalability, initiatives like NEECO highlight the growing role of Nepali entrepreneurs in developing locally driven environmental solutions.IMG-20260707-WA0003-1783417649.jpg
As Nepal continues to address the challenges of plastic waste management, startups focused on sustainable product innovation could play an increasingly important role in supporting national and global environmental goals.
