  • Lift Irrigation from Bheri River Transforms Farming in Jajarkot
Lift Irrigation from Bheri River Transforms Farming in Jajarkot

Jajarkot, Nepal - What was once a largely rain-dependent farming landscape in Aali of Bheri Municipality-10 has begun to change significantly, as farmers now harvest up to three crops a year following the introduction of lift irrigation from the Bheri River.
The green fields stretching along the riverbanks, visible across the valley, reflect a shift in local agricultural practices. Farmers in the area have successfully cultivated wheat after water was pumped uphill from the Bheri River, ensuring a reliable irrigation supply even during dry periods.
Local residents say the availability of irrigation has reduced their dependence on erratic rainfall and improved crop productivity. Traditionally, farming in this hilly region of Karnali Province was limited to one or two seasonal crops due to water scarcity. The new irrigation facility has made year-round cultivation possible, strengthening local food security and farm incomes.
The initiative also highlights the importance of small-scale irrigation infrastructure in climate-vulnerable regions like western Nepal, where changing rainfall patterns increasingly threaten traditional agriculture. By utilizing river water through lift technology, farmers are adapting to these challenges while making productive use of fertile riverbank land.
Agriculture experts note that such localized irrigation solutions can play a crucial role in rural development if managed sustainably, particularly in remote districts like Jajarkot, where access to large irrigation canals remains limited.
As lush green fields now dominate the Bheri river corridor in Aali, the project stands as an example of how targeted water management can revive rural livelihoods and enhance agricultural resilience in Nepal’s hill districts.
