Kathmandu, Nepal - The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), the official country representative of the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (UIAGM/IFMGA) in Nepal, successfully organized the 20th Annual National Mountain Guide Meet 2025 today, marking a significant milestone in the professional development of Nepal’s mountaineering sector.
Established in 2005 as a non-profit organization under Nepal’s NGO Act 2034, NNMGA has played a pivotal role in standardizing professional mountaineering practices in Nepal. The association was formed by experienced Nepali mountain guides with the objective of uniting mountaineering manpower and elevating guiding standards in line with international benchmarks, while also contributing to the national economy.
Speaking at the event, NNMGA representatives highlighted the organization’s long journey-from a time when Nepali mountaineers relied solely on experience and bravery, to the present era of internationally certified professional guiding. Formal mountaineering education in Nepal began in 1979, and subsequent collaborations with institutions such as France’s National School of Ski and Alpinism (ENSA) laid the foundation for professional guide training. These efforts eventually led to NNMGA’s formal recognition as Nepal’s IFMGA member organization on 3 May 2012.
To date, NNMGA has produced 100 IFMGA-certified mountain guides, all actively contributing to mountaineering and expedition activities both within Nepal and internationally. In addition, the association currently has 34 conditional members, reflecting a growing pipeline of aspiring professional guides.
The association’s activities extend beyond training to include advocacy for mountain workers, safety enhancement in climbing and expeditions, rescue assistance, networking, and policy engagement. Through joint training programs with national and international institutions, NNMGA continues to uphold the highest global standards of mountaineering education, emphasizing safety, professionalism, and sustainability.
During the 20th annual meet, participants discussed the future of mountaineering in Nepal, the importance of culturally appropriate and sustainable training programs, and the need for continued collaboration with global partners. The event also reaffirmed NNMGA’s commitment to improving the welfare, skills, and professional recognition of Nepali mountain guides.
NNMGA envisions a future where Nepalese mountain guides are globally respected for their expertise, safety practices, and professionalism. As Nepal’s mountain tourism continues to play a vital role in the national economy, organizations like NNMGA remain central to ensuring that the sector develops responsibly, safely, and sustainably.
