Nepal has taken an important step toward strengthening inclusive climate governance as UN Women Nepal and UNDP Nepal jointly convened a national consultation with the Government of Nepal to embed Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) more deeply into the implementation of Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0.
The consultation, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE) and the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen (MoWCSC), brought together representatives from federal agencies, civil society organizations, youth groups, Indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, and climate experts. The discussion aimed to ensure that Nepal’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement are equitable, community-centered, and reflective of the diverse needs of the population.
Participants reviewed NDC 3.0 targets and indicators through a GEDSI lens, identifying critical gaps and opportunities to strengthen coordination, financing mechanisms, community engagement, and monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems. The consultation emphasized that climate policies must go beyond broad commitments and translate into tangible, locally grounded actions that benefit and empower those most affected by climate change.
Speaking at the event, Mehtap Tatar, Deputy Representative of UN Women Nepal, stated that inclusive climate action “is not optional, it is essential.” She underscored that women, youth, Indigenous peoples, low-income communities, and persons with disabilities should be recognized not merely as beneficiaries but as leaders, innovators, and key agents of resilience and mitigation.
The initiative comes at a pivotal moment as global attention turns toward COP30 in Brazil. Nepal aims to showcase its commitment to feminist climate justice and inclusive climate transitions, positioning GEDSI integration as a cornerstone of its climate policy implementation.
UN Women reaffirmed its support to the Government of Nepal in strengthening just, transformative, and intersectional climate solutions under NDC 3.0 and beyond—ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s climate response.
