Kathmandu, Nepal - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched its flagship report, the State of World Population 2025, in Nepal, spotlighting the critical factors shaping family dynamics in the country and globally. The report emphasizes that economic hardships, escalating living costs, inadequate childcare facilities, and persistent gender inequality are significant barriers preventing millions, including Nepalis, from realizing their desired family aspirations.
While declining fertility rates might suggest a demographic trend, the report reframes the issue as one of empowerment and choice. It argues that supporting individuals in achieving their reproductive goals requires comprehensive and inclusive policies. The UNFPA urges governments to prioritize investments in affordable healthcare, expand parental leave options, create flexible workplaces, and promote gender equality to address these challenges.
In Nepal, these measures are crucial for unlocking the country’s demographic dividend. The nation’s youthful population represents a significant opportunity for economic and social development, provided the right frameworks are in place to support family life and individual aspirations.
UNFPA Executive Director Natalia Kanem stated during the report’s launch, “Investing in people’s reproductive rights and choices is not just a matter of fairness; it is a foundation for prosperity.”
The report calls for urgent collaboration among governments, private sectors, and civil society to ensure that families have the resources and freedom to thrive. It underscores that enabling environments—where reproductive autonomy is respected and supported—can lead to a more sustainable and equitable future for Nepal and beyond.
