Chitwan, June 1 – Local governments in Chitwan have pledged to collaborate on addressing the challenges of climate change, disaster management, and environmental conservation. This commitment was underscored during a workshop organized by the District Coordination Committee, which brought together representatives from all seven local governments in the district.
Renu Dahal, Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, emphasized the critical need for collaboration among local bodies to mitigate risks associated with climate change and disasters. “Risk management work is ongoing, but it needs to be carried out more effectively as the impacts of climate change are increasing day by day,” said Dahal.
The District Coordination Committee Chief, Narayan Prasad Adhikari, called on all local governments to adopt a unified approach. “Since these issues are directly linked to human life, we must unite for environmental protection and disaster preparedness,” he remarked, urging local governments to develop a joint strategy to address these pressing concerns.
The workshop highlighted the growing challenges posed by climate change, including its adverse impacts on human health and livelihoods. Deputy Mayor Kalpana Kafle Sapkota noted the direct correlation between rising climate risks and increased vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of curbing these impacts to ensure effective disaster management.
Expert Recommendations and Ongoing Efforts
Experts at the workshop presented actionable strategies for sustainable solutions. Environmental expert Dilu Ghimire stressed the importance of adapting to upcoming disasters and the changing climate. “Local governments must prioritize efforts to reduce damage and create resilient communities,” Ghimire said, adding that a proactive approach is essential to addressing these challenges.
Similarly, environmental expert Purushottam Aryal highlighted gaps in the implementation of national climate policies at the local level. Aryal urged local governments to integrate climate change concerns into their development plans for long-term solutions.
Representatives from local governments shared updates on their ongoing efforts to address climate and disaster risks. Initiatives range from disaster preparedness programs to environmental conservation activities, demonstrating a commitment to creating safer and more sustainable communities.
Call for Unified Action
Chitwan district, comprising one metropolitan city, five municipalities, and one rural municipality, has seen increased environmental and disaster-related challenges in recent years. The workshop served as a platform for leaders, officials, and experts to come together and outline a shared vision for tackling these issues.
The event concluded with a strong call for unified action among local governments to implement strategies that protect vulnerable populations, promote environmental sustainability, and strengthen disaster resilience. This collaborative approach is expected to set a precedent for other regions grappling with similar challenges, aligning local efforts with national priorities to create a sustainable future.
