The climate that defined the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century has effectively disappeared, with extreme heat increasingly becoming the country's "new normal", according to the latest State of the UK Climate report released by the UK Met Office.
The report presents compelling evidence that the UK's climate has undergone a profound transformation, driven by human-induced climate change. Scientists say the country is now experiencing warmer conditions across every timescale-from annual averages to daily temperatures-with weather patterns that were once considered exceptional becoming increasingly common.
"We are right now living in a time of historic and unprecedented change, and in terms of temperature, on annual, seasonal, monthly and daily timescales, this evidence shows the climate of the 20th Century has now gone," said Mike Kendon, Climate Information Scientist at the Met Office.
According to the report, 2025 was the warmest year on record in the UK since national records began in 1884. The decade spanning 2016-2025 was 1.33°C warmer than the 1961-1990 average, illustrating a significant long-term warming trend.
One of the most striking findings is that the hottest day of the year in southern England is now typically 4.5°C warmer than it was during 1961-1990. Scientists warn that even relatively small increases in average temperatures substantially raise the likelihood of extreme heat events.
The report also highlights a dramatic rise in heat extremes across urban areas. In Greater London, the number of days with temperatures exceeding 30°C, as well as nights where temperatures remained above 18°C, has more than quadrupled during 2016-2025 compared with the 1961-1990 period.
Climate zones are also shifting northwards. Regions such as the Vale of York and Lancashire are now experiencing temperature conditions comparable to those that Greater London experienced between 1961 and 1990. Scientists describe this trend as climate "moving north and uphill," with colder mountain habitats gradually disappearing due to rising temperatures.
The warming trend has had significant public health consequences. During the exceptionally hot weather in May and June 2025, researchers from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine estimate that more than 2,700 people may have died from heat-related causes in England and Wales.
The report also reveals growing concerns over water security. Spring 2025 was England's driest in more than a century, with most of England and Wales receiving less than half of the average rainfall recorded during 1991-2020. River flows between March and August 2025 were the second lowest since 1961, highlighting the increasing risk of prolonged drought.
Scientists warn that climate change is expected to bring increasingly contrasting weather patterns across the UK, with more intense winter rainfall and flooding alongside hotter, drier summers and more frequent droughts.
Dry conditions are already affecting agriculture and ecosystems. By late June, soils across central and southern England were considerably drier than normal, reducing plant growth, threatening crop productivity, limiting food availability for wildlife, and increasing the likelihood of wildfires. Dry soils also absorb and retain heat more efficiently, further intensifying heatwaves.
The Met Office concludes that the UK's changing climate underscores the urgent need for stronger climate adaptation measures. As temperatures continue to rise, scientists emphasize that homes, hospitals, schools, transport systems and critical infrastructure must be redesigned to withstand increasingly frequent and severe heat events.
The findings add to growing global evidence that climate change is fundamentally reshaping regional weather patterns and increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, reinforcing the need for both rapid greenhouse gas emission reductions and long-term climate resilience planning.
