Nepali Diaspora, Climate Activists Rally at UN for Climate Reparations

NEW YORK, September 23, 2026 - Members of Nepal’s diaspora, frontline communities and international climate activists gathered outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday, calling for stronger international action on climate-related loss and damage, climate reparations and a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
The demonstration came as world leaders and diplomats gathered in New York for the high-level week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) and amid international attention on Nepal’s devastating August floods and glacier-related disaster.
According to reports from the rally, demonstrators argued that countries and communities that have contributed relatively little to global greenhouse-gas emissions are facing increasingly severe consequences of a warming climate. Protesters called on wealthy, high-emitting countries to provide greater financial support for loss and damage, adaptation, resilience and recovery in vulnerable developing nations.
The gathering also highlighted Nepal’s demand for climate justice following the August 26 flash floods and glacier collapse, which caused widespread loss of life and severe damage to infrastructure in northern Nepal. The United Nations has reported that the disaster affected tens of thousands of people, while more than 1,300 deaths and thousands of missing people had been recorded during the early September response period.
Nepal has formally sought US$20 million from the UN-backed Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage. The request comes as the country assesses the enormous economic and infrastructure impacts of the disaster. Independent analysis has estimated that Nepal’s requested amount represents only a small fraction of the country's estimated flood-related damage and losses.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who is attending UNGA 81 in New York, is expected to raise Nepal’s climate vulnerability, climate justice and the need for international support during his address to the General Assembly. Nepal's delegation has indicated that loss and damage and climate change are among the country's key international concerns at the session.
The scientific basis for Nepal's concerns has also received growing international attention. Recent research has linked the August disaster to a combination of climate-related glacier and permafrost changes and other geological factors, while scientists have emphasized the increasing instability of rapidly warming Himalayan environments.
The New York rally reflected a broader climate-justice movement seeking greater accountability from major emitters and polluting industries. Activists also connected climate action with issues including migrant rights, social equality and a just transition away from fossil fuels. A separate “Make Billionaires Pay” mobilization in New York earlier in the week brought together climate and social-justice groups around related demands.
For Nepal, the demonstrations added a public dimension to its diplomatic push at the United Nations: moving the international conversation from emergency humanitarian assistance toward long-term financing for loss and damage, adaptation, resilient reconstruction and climate justice.
As Nepal continues to recover from one of its most devastating recent climate-related disasters, its message in New York is increasingly centred on a fundamental question of international climate policy: how should the global community support countries facing severe climate impacts despite having contributed relatively little to the accumulation of greenhouse-gas emissions?
