Pokhara - A 30-day skill development training on sewing, tailoring, and product design using discarded textiles has commenced in Amarshing Chowk, Pokhara under the Green Job Creation through Recycling and Upcycling in Pokhara (GCRU) Project. The initiative is funded by KOICA and implemented by UNDP Nepal in coordination with Pokhara Metropolitan City to promote green employment, sustainable livelihoods, and circular economy practices.
The training has brought together 32 women from 18 Recycling and Upcycling (RU) Groups representing different wards of Pokhara Metropolitan City. The participants, selected through the project's community awareness, entrepreneurship, and skill development programmes, will receive practical training to transform discarded textiles into value-added products with commercial potential.
Over the next 30 days, participants will develop hands-on skills in sewing, tailoring, cutting, and product design to manufacture products such as reusable bags, soft toys, decorative items, and flowers made from corn husks. Upon successful completion of the programme, each participant will receive a sewing machine to help establish or expand recycling and upcycling-based enterprises.
The training is being facilitated by CLEAN UP NEPAL, with technical instruction provided by Bidhata Hastakala Tatha Prabidik Talim Kendra. Lead trainer Sabita Ranjit said the programme is designed to equip participants with professional sewing and finishing techniques required to produce high-quality, market-ready products from discarded textile materials.
The initiative forms part of the GCRU Project's broader effort to strengthen community-based recycling and upcycling enterprises across Pokhara. According to the project, support has already been extended to 10 recycling and upcycling enterprises and community groups that are converting locally available waste materials into valuable products while generating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable waste management.
The project ultimately aims to establish 136 community-level Recycling and Upcycling Groups and support 30 growth-oriented recycling and upcycling enterprises across Pokhara. Through these interventions, the programme targets the creation of more than 680 green jobs, a reduction in landfill waste, and the promotion of circular economy businesses in line with the vision of "Green Pokhara, Clean Pokhara."
Supported by KOICA Nepal Office and UNDP Nepal in collaboration with Pokhara Metropolitan City, the GCRU Project continues to empower local communities through skills training, business incubation, and equipment support, contributing to a cleaner, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable urban future.
