Kathmandu - UN Women has reiterated the urgent need to ensure equal access for women and girls to quality education, economic resources, and leadership opportunities worldwide.
In a recent statement aligned with its global advocacy campaign #ForAllWomenAndGirls, UN Women emphasized that gender equality remains a fundamental pillar for sustainable development. Despite notable progress in recent decades, millions of women and girls-particularly in developing countries-continue to face systemic barriers that limit their access to education, employment, and participation in decision-making processes.
The organization stressed that access to quality education is a critical first step toward empowerment. Educated women are more likely to secure better employment, contribute to economic growth, and make informed decisions about their lives and communities. However, disparities persist, especially in rural and marginalized regions, where socio-economic and cultural factors often restrict girls’ educational opportunities.
Equally important is access to economic resources. UN Women highlighted that women’s financial inclusion-through access to credit, property rights, and entrepreneurship opportunities-remains uneven. Bridging this gap is essential to reduce poverty and build resilient economies.
Furthermore, the statement underscored the importance of equal representation in leadership and decision-making roles. Women remain underrepresented in political institutions, corporate leadership, and community governance, limiting diverse perspectives in shaping policies and development agendas.
UN Women called on governments, private sectors, civil society, and international partners to take concrete actions to dismantle these barriers and create inclusive systems that empower women and girls.
The message resonates strongly in countries like Nepal, where efforts to improve gender equality have made progress but challenges remain, particularly in rural access to education, economic participation, and leadership inclusion.
Ensuring equal opportunities for women and girls is not only a matter of human rights but also a strategic necessity for achieving long-term sustainable development.
