Kathmandu, June 18 - While heavy rainfall continues in parts of eastern Nepal, several districts in the Terai are experiencing a sharp rise in temperature, with mercury crossing 40 degrees Celsius in some locations, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).
Meteorological records from the past 24 hours show significant rainfall in several districts. Gorkha recorded 71.8 millimeters of rainfall, Morang received 61.8 millimeters, Sunsari measured 51.4 millimeters, and Jhapa recorded 71.2 millimeters. Earlier, Jhapa had witnessed more than 103 millimeters of rainfall within a day, highlighting the uneven distribution of precipitation across the country.
Despite the rainfall activity in the eastern region, temperatures have continued to climb across much of the Terai. According to DHM data, Bhairahawa recorded the highest temperature at 41.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Nepalgunj at 40.4 degrees Celsius and Dhangadhi at 38.8 degrees Celsius. Kathmandu also experienced warmer conditions, with the maximum temperature reaching 31.3 degrees Celsius. Recent meteorological assessments have also warned of hot-day and heatwave conditions in several Terai districts.
DHM Information Officer Dinkar Kayastha stated that hot daytime conditions are likely to persist in Dhangadhi, Birendranagar, Nepalgunj, Ghorahi, Bhairahawa, and Simara. Weather experts attribute the current conditions to the combined influence of a western low-pressure trough in the upper atmosphere, local wind systems, and easterly winds affecting Nepal's weather pattern.
According to the latest weather bulletin, the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces are expected to experience partly to generally cloudy conditions, with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few locations. Similar weather conditions are forecast for isolated areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces, including chances of snowfall in higher elevations.
Meanwhile, the Terai regions of Koshi and Madhesh provinces may also witness isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. However, many parts of the Terai in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces, along with some areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, are expected to continue experiencing hot daytime conditions.
Meteorologists have urged the public, particularly outdoor workers, farmers, children, and elderly citizens, to remain cautious during periods of extreme heat and to stay informed through official weather updates. The contrasting pattern of intense rainfall in some regions and extreme heat in others reflects Nepal's increasingly complex weather conditions during the ongoing monsoon transition period.
