Annapurna I Marks 76 Years Since Historic First Ascent That Changed Mountaineering History

Kathmandu, June 3 - Nepal is commemorating the 76th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Annapurna I (8,091 meters), a landmark achievement that transformed the history of global mountaineering and brought international attention to the Himalayas.
On June 3, 1950, French mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit of Annapurna I, becoming the first humans to successfully climb a mountain higher than 8,000 meters. The achievement marked the beginning of the era of high-altitude Himalayan mountaineering and paved the way for future expeditions, including the historic first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.
Located in Nepal's Annapurna mountain range in Gandaki Province, Annapurna I remains the world's tenth-highest mountain and is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and technically demanding peaks to climb.
According to recent mountaineering records, a total of 572 climbers—both Nepali and international—have successfully reached the summit of Annapurna I over the past 76 years. The number of successful ascents has increased significantly in recent years, reflecting growing global interest in Nepal's mountaineering sector.
To mark the anniversary, various tourism and mountain-related activities have been organized in the Annapurna region, including the sixth edition of the Annapurna Marathon. The event aims to celebrate the mountain's legacy while promoting adventure tourism and local economic development.
The anniversary also highlights the importance of conserving Nepal's fragile mountain ecosystems. As climate change continues to affect Himalayan glaciers, biodiversity, and local communities, experts emphasize the need for sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship to protect the Annapurna region for future generations.
More than seven decades after the historic climb, Annapurna I continues to symbolize human courage, exploration, and Nepal's enduring contribution to global mountaineering history.
