Sekung Lake: Mustang's Hidden Alpine Jewel Awaits Nature Lovers

Mustang, Nepal | Ecosphere News
Nestled in the serene landscapes of Thasang Rural Municipality-2 in Mustang, Sekung Lake (also spelled Sekong Lake) is quietly emerging as one of Nepal's most captivating yet lesser-known natural destinations. Surrounded by dense pine forests and framed by the towering Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountain ranges, the lake offers visitors a peaceful retreat away from the region's more crowded tourist hotspots.
The image captures the lake's calm waters reflecting dramatic monsoon clouds, evergreen forests, and rugged Himalayan peaks—highlighting the pristine beauty that makes Sekung Lake an ideal destination for nature photography, birdwatching, and quiet outdoor recreation.
Reaching the lake requires a short adventure. Travelers follow the Beni–Jomsom Highway before branching off at Boksikhola, where a 15 to 30-minute uphill hike leads to the lake. Although the final stretch is not accessible by vehicle, the walk offers scenic views and a rewarding off-the-beaten-path experience.
Local authorities, together with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), have improved visitor access by constructing stone-paved walking trails and rest areas. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism while protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. However, conservationists note that continued investment in environmental management, visitor facilities, and responsible tourism practices will be essential to preserve the lake's natural character.
As interest in eco-tourism grows, Sekung Lake represents a promising destination where breathtaking landscapes, conservation, and community-based tourism can coexist. With careful planning and sustainable development, this hidden alpine lake has the potential to become one of Mustang's signature nature attractions while maintaining the ecological integrity that makes it so special.
